Bone mineral density (BMD) scan      £220
Do I need a BMD scan?
The likelihood of bone fractures is greatly increased if you have osteoporosis – thinning of the bones. You may consider a scan if any of the following apply to you:
  • Post-menopausal
  • Fractured a bone after minimal trauma
  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Currently taking steroid medication
  • Undergoing treatment for prostate or breast cancer
  • Have ever had an eating disorder
The diagnosis of osteoporosis using EBCT
One in three women, and one in twelve men, in the UK will develop osteoporosis after the age of 50. An estimated three million people in this country suffer from the disease, which can lead to very disabling bone breaks and fractures.

During a BMD scan we image your hip bones and lumbar vertebrae. The level of x-ray absorption gives an accurate indication of the density of your bones. Using this information we can calculate your individual bone density measurements and hence estimate your risk of osteoporosis.

Do I need to prepare for the scan?
No preparation is needed for the BMD scan although you will be asked to change into a gown beforehand.

The actual time you spend in the scanner is about 10 minutes. Further details can be found in the Your Visit section.
